Easy Christmas crafts for decorating the classroom

Here are some easy Christmas crafts I’ve tried over the years. They are not meant to be taken home by the kids, but to decorate the classroom for the holidays. That takes some of the pressure off as they don’t have to be perfect, and it’s nice collaborative work as all the kids contribute to one final product.

Seasons pyramid craft

Here’s a great craft I tried last week: the seasons pyramid.

    IMG_E2355

IMG_2372

I did this with my 4-year-olds because we needed visual support to learn the seasons, but I recommend this craft for ages 5 and up, as their drawing skills will be more developed. As it is, we had to use stamps (snowflake, flower, sun and leaf) to make sure everyone knew what season it was. Winking smile

Here’s how you make it:

IMG_2376IMG_2377

We used A3 sheets and made it a collaborative activity. We had 4 groups (one for each season), and every kid drew one thing typical of that season. Then I glued the four parts together, and now we have our seasons pyramid for the classroom.

With older students, you can also use normal (A4) sheets and have each kid make their own pyramid.

Also, this is the song we sing to learn the seasons:

Let me know what you think of the craft and of the song!

How do you teach the seasons?

Simple autumn collage

Autumn is just around the corner! School is about to start here in Spain, and I’m looking for some inspiration for my English class.

ea42ccc85fce5a463ed50d06cfa4c847

Look at this art project! I just love it! Beauty + simplicity. You can ask kids to bring some autumn goodies to class, and then create their collage. I think this is a great opportunity to practise cooperation: a group of students can make a collage together.

Click on the picture to read the original post. It’s in Catalan but the photos are self-explanatory. The things you’ll need are few:

  • autumn goods
  • sheets of paper
  • some cardboard to glue the paper on
  • glue

Use this activity to practise autumn vocabulary and understanding simple instructions. Have fun!

Here are some cute and “doable” winter related crafts I found on Pinterest:

Footprint snowmen:

Winter tree collage:

Christmas tree craft How I'd do it: Draw triangles on white paper, glue tissue paper to paper. Paint snowy ground on blue paper. Let both dry. Cut out trees, older kids can cut out themselves. Glue trees and pre-cut trunks to snow. Use end of pencil in white paint for snowflakes or cotton ball in paint pad.

I love this! So cute!

Puzzle piece snowflake:

FACE ON A PLATE

If you have time to cut out some eyes, ears, mouths and noses from old magazines, you can have this great activity on body parts. I’ve done this with my 3-year-olds.

IMG_2468

First, we separated and classified the different parts.

Then we glued them to a round plastic plate to make a funny face. Everyone got theirs! You can play games and sing songs with them, and children can take them home and show their parents what they’ve learnt.
